My Pubic Area Skin Routine

My Pubic Area Skin Routine

It's time to pamper your pubic area!

I'm not sure if you've heard, but the V-zone is the new T-zone, with a myriad of beauty brands offering everything from moisturizers to mists in a quest to hydrate and beautify your bikini zone.

Here, a simple pubic area skincare routine for keeping *down there* in flawless shape. Yes, really.

Just because the skin down there has fewer sebaceous glands, doesn't mean cleaning can be skipped. You should be cleansing your lady parts. Daily!

Pick a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser or body wash which is formulated to support the vagina's slightly acidic natural pH. If you're not sure which one to choose, speak to your gynecologist for recommendations.

Also, avoid using products made with irritants like parabens and some essential oils which may burn sensitive skin. Take note if you're experiencing redness or itchiness in your bikini area, as it may indicate your cleanser is too harsh. That's your signal to swap it out for something gentler and more natural.

To keep your pubes, vulva, and everything else squeaky clean and hygienic, aim to wash at least once a day.

Exfoliation is a fundamental part of your pubic area skin routine. Getting rid of dead skin cells will help reduce the hyperpigmentation, dark spots, bumps, and burns that shaving can cause.

Dermatologists recommend using scrubs with both chemical (using AHAs like glycolic acid) and physical exfoliation (using sugar or salt as a base) to reap the benefits of both, as they both optimize each other for enhanced results.

Exfoliating often also prevents a buildup of dry skin, which can create ingrown hairs. For best results, exfoliate 2-3 times a week to keep the bikini line area soft, smooth, and ingrown-free. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to limit gentle exfoliation sessions to only once a week.

I love Truly's Smooth Legend Pre-Shave Scrub for getting me smooth and glowing. It smells delicious, feels ultra-hydrating, and leaves my skin feeling beautiful and bouncy!

Now for the hair removal process. Of course, this is completely optional. If you want to rock a full bush, go ahead and embrace the fuzz. Prefer feeling smooth and hair-free like me? Be sure to use the best shaving techniques and products to remove your pubic hair without suffering razor burn, bumps, or ingrowns. Ouch!

Start by using the right shaving cream to protect your skin from dryness and irritation. My top pick? Truly's Happy Hairless Shave Butter. It's made with lavender, coconut, passion fruit, and vitamin E to heal, hydrate, and banish bacteria for an ultra-close shave minus any discomfort.

Next, always shave with the grain, using a clean, sharp, double-bladed razor like Truly's Life Shaver Starter Razor

Complete the process with a nourishing, soothing after shave oil to bring down redness and irritation in sensitive areas and keep the area hydrated. Truly's Glazed Donut After Shave Oil boasts intensely hydrating properties to heal razor bumps while softening the skin and eliminating ingrowns.

If you're someone who frequently deals with issues like ingrowns, itchiness, and irritation, it's worth investing in a topical ingrown concentrate treatment to prevent ingrown formation altogether.

I can't recommend Truly's Cooka Concentrate enough for its abilities to relieve and prevent ingrown formation on the bikini line.

It's formulated with antimicrobial lavender, hydrating jojoba oil, and elasticity-restoring primrose to relieve inflammation and promote an even skin tone.

One of its other key ingredients is tea tree oil, an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antimicrobial ingredient effective at treating irritated, inflamed skin. Besides combatting oiliness and preventing breakouts, tea tree oil can also help promote healthy hair growth.

I apply this serum to areas prone to redness and ingrowns, including my pubic area, underarms, and legs.

Keep your pubic area skin soft, smooth, and nourished by regularly applying a deeply conditioning body lotion like Truly's Unicorn Fruit Whipped Body Butter.

Buttery and beautiful on the eye, this multi-colored body moisturizer is packed with a blend of skin-repairing ingredients like acai, matcha, vegan collagen, and rose. With a base of shea butter, this body butter works to create a protective, hydrating barrier for your skin to keep it strong and healthy.

Used daily, you can expect: Firmer, smoother, and plumper skin. I also love how this butter smells so sweet -- like candyfloss. I literally want to scoop thus stuff straight into my mouth!

Want to rock a full bush? While I favor a smooth, fuzz-free finish, I want to add this step in for anyone who wants to take care of their pubic hair or general body hair.

You may have heard of fur oil? It's an oil especially designed to soften and smooth bikini line hairs. Well, Truly's created a pubic hair oil of its own. It's called Cooka Oil, and it really is the best thing ever for taking care of your hair follicles and fuzz. I consider it a pubic hair care staple, whether or not you've got hair.

Silky, lightweight, and suitable for all skin types, this antimicrobial oil for the pubic hair and bikini line gently soothes irritation, combats ingrowns, and softens the hair and skin. Use daily for grease-free hydration and a noticeably softer skin texture.

Wear Sunscreen

Okay, so this only really applies if you're sunbathing, as this would mean the bikini area is exposed to UV rays and ultimately vulnerable to sun damage. I apply a thin layer of sunscreen every time I head to the beach to keep my lady parts protected! You should too!

When To Consider Laser Hair Removal

If ingrown hairs are a major issue for you, know that waxing is definitely not a better option. The best option for you would be to try laser hair removal therapy, which significantly reduces your risk of getting ingrowns and inflammation. Book an appointment with your dermatologist to discuss your options and see if you'd be a good candidate.

Every woman needs (and deserves!) a good pubic area skin routine. Start showing yours a little more TLC!
