Here’s everything you need to know about this new beauty trend — and whether or not you should give it a try.
Jello skin is a Korean skincare trend coined by TikTok influencer Ava Lee (@glowwithava). It focuses on trying to make skin as bouncy and elastic as possible, so that when you touch it or move it out of place, it springs right back — like jello!
In 2021, Lee posted a video that saw celebrity facialist Lord Gavin McLeod Valentine say how amazed with how elastic her skin was and that when you pinch it, it bounces back like jello. The TikTok video went viral, racking up over 1.5 million views. Lee has now created an entire series on TikTok sharing her top tips in how to achieve jello-like skin.
To get jello-like skin, the main focus needs to be on hydration which can be achieved through using hyaluronic acid-based skincare products like creams and sheet masks, and drinking plenty of water. Sunscreen is another must-have to protect your skin from collagen-degrading UV rays. But to really supercharge bouncy skin, collagen is the active ingredient to look out for. Naturally produced in the body, collagen is responsible for giving skin structure and elasticity, and it’s essential for getting jello skin.
According to dermatologists, jello skin is a good goal for keeping skin youthful, but the trend might not be achievable by all.
“While the jello skin trend is certainly an example of promoting hydration and elasticity in your skin, the youthful appearance of skin that gives it that 'bounce-back' factor is often reliant on genetic factors that are outside of your control,” says Dr. Anna Chacon, dermatology advisor at Favor. In other words, if you’re mom or gramps doesn’t have springy skin, you probably won’t either.
Meanwhile, skincare expert Dr. Ana Mansouri explains that the ‘snap-back’ test is a tool commonly used in a clinical setting to examine loss of collagen and elasticity in elderly people. But she adds that it might not be so beneficial for the younger generation.
“It's an irrelevant and arbitrary measure that could contribute to insecurities and unhealthy beauty ideals,” she says. “We shouldn't be comparing a living organ to anything but.”
Most derms agree, however, that it’s most beneficial to focus on hydrating, nourishing, and protecting the skin without being too focused on the skin springing back like jello.
Jello skin can’t be achieved with one single product, but you can improve skin’s elasticity by making some adjustments and additions to your daily skincare routine. Here’s how.
Massage Your Face
Incorporating facial massages into your skincare regimen is a great way to create and increase elasticity in the skin. It also helps stimulate blood circulation, giving skin a healthy glow. You can either use your hands along with a facial oil or serum to perform the massage. Alternatively, try using a massaging tool like gua sha to get blood flowing, elasticity returning, and skin more luminous.
